New Hampshire Governor Kelly Ayotte received recognition from the American Federation for Children (AFC) for her actions supporting school choice, following her State of the State address on Thursday.
During her speech, Governor Ayotte emphasized efforts to expand educational opportunities in New Hampshire. “Last year, we expanded opportunities for families with universal education freedom, giving more kids the opportunity to succeed in the learning environment that works best for them,” she said. The governor described how these changes help families select schools or programs suited to their children’s needs.
Recently, New Hampshire joined 16 other states in making all students eligible for its school choice program through an expansion of the Education Freedom Account (EFA) initiative. This change has enabled thousands of families to consider a broader range of educational options within the state.
In addition, Governor Ayotte announced last week that New Hampshire will participate in the federal Education Freedom Tax Credit (EFTC), which was created after President Trump signed related legislation last summer. The EFTC is intended to further increase access to various educational pathways by offering tax credits connected with school choice decisions.
Bill Phillips, National Director of Government Affairs at AFC, issued a statement regarding these developments: “We thank Governor Ayotte for her leadership and her continued commitment to expanding school choice for families across New Hampshire. Her work to make all students eligible for the state-based Education Freedom Account program, coupled with her recent decision to opt into the federal Education Freedom Tax Credit, translates to life-changing opportunities for students and families. We look forward to continuing to work with the Governor and the state legislature to build on this momentum and to ensure every New Hampshire student can access the educational environment in which they will thrive.”
The American Federation for Children describes itself as a national advocacy group focused on expanding school choice and education freedom policies across the United States. According to AFC, it has contributed toward passing over 200 laws nationwide aimed at increasing education options and supporting parental involvement in policy decisions.
